Nothing to really fear with the arnott units. Plenty of people here have used them without incident. From the pics you've posted, it looks as though the fronts were high enough to not cause any issue. The fronts have more wiggle room than the rears, so if anything I'd worry about those first.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
i have front arnott units and they are better than OE in my opinion, no fear with them.

hope the links and rods get your ride back into shape, keep us posted when you replace them and let us know how the tension arm replacement went!

xsx450, Did you figure out why your Driver Side was lower then the passenger? I have the same issue on my 4.8is. I'm not sure if its the sensor , or the air spring ? Any thoughts ?

Update.

So I went to install the new links and discovered the the front Links were indeed OEM, and the rears were all that needed replacing. Raised the Rear a TINY bit, but in no way did it help solve the bottoming.

So I go back to square one, thinking "They must have lowered it with the tuner, or software of some type". So I take it to my indy to have the ride height adjusted. I get the X back and they told me was a little low, I press a little farther into what they did and discover they didnt even drive it and check again. Long story short, not sure if it moved or not (didnt measure before) but STILL bottoming BAD. $100 out the window.

Fast forward a few weeks I am under the car changing oil, and I am staring at the ride height sensor just angry at the whole bottoming situation. and I have a "THOSE MOTHER$%@#$" moment.

I discover that the bracket that holds the sensor had been modified. There are two screws that attach it to the bracket. The lower hole in the bracket had been CUT! so it was more of a slot, exiting to the edge of the bracket (sorry for the lack of better words). Essentially they had modified it to Pivot on the upper bolt, and slid it over no more than 5-6MM, which rotated the arm whatever amount in the sensor (Same effect as shorting the Link).

So I Fix both sides (losen nut and slide it back to original spot). Get out from under the X and close the Hood, and lower it off the rhino ramps. BAM!!!! almost 1" higher on each side.

I take it for a test drive. SMASHING the brakes over speed humps, hitting the same two potholes in town that would send "SELL THIS FUCKING CAR" signals to my head everytime i drove over them. The result = ITS PERFECT. SOAKS UP EVERYTHING LIKE IT WASNT EVEN THERE.

My theory - The X was lowered (shorter links in the rear, notched sensor bracket to rotate the sensor in the front). SOMEHOW this lead to harsh internal bottoming in the strut. I do not know what happened, maybe an internal bump stop deteriorated. Maybe the previous owner hit a curb straight on going 50. I have no idea, but both sides were equally shot. All I know is they are Arnott reman. Struts...

I have absolutely loved the X ever since. This was the one issue that was going to make me sell the car if i couldnt get it fixed. Not sure if new struts would have fixed it but i didnt want to throw $800 at it.

I am still VERY weary of everyone else who has their X lowered without coil overs... Everyone else seems to be doing fine. Maybe it was being lowered combined with some type of abuse or damage....

On a side note, the tension bushings made it quite a bit better feeling when going in/out of driveways, or over rough road. But it was never really bad. I got no shimmy breaking or ever.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed that in your pictures the X5 seems to be lower on the driver side and higher on the passenger side. Did you ever figure out why that was like that?

Yeah it may be. Sometimes I notice it, some times i think its the curve of the road.

I suspect the rear bags are probably due for replacement.

I will deal with it later. I am still enjoying this small victory. You have to celebrate the small victories...

P.S. Your X looks great! Im contemplating going back to titanium grills. The "blacked out" look is sweet, but the black grills make it look like nothing special. The Titanium grills definitely look special...

FYI-It is possible to lower your X5 and not have any problems. H&R offers shorter front springs and adjustable ride height links for the rear. The links are adjustable so ride height is your call. The kit drops the X just over 1.5in. on both ends. Rear links are a very simple install. Changing the front springs is much more involved. Coil overs are far more adjustable but much higher cost. I went the H&R route about 3 years ago--all is well--so far.

FYI- The 4.8 is has air struts in the front.

I am not sure what you are referring to...

Yes the correct way to lower the vehicle would be coil overs which I have stated. This thread is about my front struts being messed up, and how/what potentially caused this.

I have read all posts in this thread and am aware of the problem you were having. I was responding to your comment that coil overs are the only way to safely lower an X as I took as a comment about all X5s. You can drop yours safely about 1.5 inches by replacing the regulating arms (12) with adjustable arms. It fools the air suspension You may not be interested after what you have been through. Good to hear you have resolved the issue. Things like that are like chronic pain to me, they just wear you down.

right, i think that tricking the front bags (which was done on mine) seems to lead to issues, the rears were tricked too but did not have issue.

These types of issues annoy the shit out of me. especially when passengers/significant others are in the car.
