After market head unit install

Hi all, this is my first post on here after aquiring my E53 4.4i sport just after christmas. This is my second BMW, first was an E46 330ci, and consider myself a competant mechanic and able to handle most jobs etc.

My problem is this, i don't like the standard 16:9 satnav with DSP that is fitted one little bit and so am now set on changing it to my kenwood single DIN flip out multimedia head unit to bring back all satnav, Ipod and Video capability etc.

Intention is to remove DSP amp, radio module, tv Module(analogue no good in UK now) refit in my H/U, satnav. Single DIN H/U allows for fitment of MID below in correct position. Speaker output from DSP amp spliced/connected to H/U output etc with resistors to correct speaker impedance.

16:9 unit out, two plugs one blue one white. White one has the two lugs removed so to fit black connector on MID. MID does not light up at all. Is there a pin out diagram for both connectors to ensure they are the same or does the blue plug need to be connected to something aswell in order for the MID to turn on?

Any and all help is appreciated as is advice

I'm in the middle of this myself....

I've installed double din Kenwood with power coming from two open blocks in the fuse box in the glove box. Three RCA's run to a single 5-channel Kenwood amp mounted in place of the factory DSP amp. Power from the amp is very easily routed to the amp from the trunk mounted battery and there is a large grounding lug in the compartment too.

I have opted for four Audio Pipe CRX-303 passive crossovers to deliver sound to all ten factory speakers. I have 6 hooked up at the moment, got too cold and too late last night to complete the remaining connections but initial results are positive.

I do have an alternator whine with then engine on, tonight I will try to rework HU ground.

I will look for the speaker pin out I found from another member here, it is very helpful.

Here you go, pin out for DSP speakers is towards the bottom of the first post.

First bit of trouble i am having is getting the MID to turn on. I have two MIDS both refurbished. One is the correct one to fit the hole correctly and has a black plug the second i believe is from an E38, because it has a slightly smaller profile allowing me great space to position the single din head unit.

The white (natural) coloured plug has been modified to fit the black female connector and slides in completely to make contact.

Does anybody have pinout diags for the white connector, i have the black one via WDS?

Cheers 70=k5 for the link, that makes for some helpful reading

Well the intention is simple, remove DSP, TV, satnav, radio module and head unit. use exiting speaker wires on output side of DSP and wire to speaker out of after market head unit. Run permanent +ve 12V line fused from battery to head unit and uncover a temporary +ve 12v line in the head unit area. then add on peripherals as required that i know work with my Kenwood. should be pretty straight forward after I get the MID to work!!

I'm a BMW novice but why do you need to keep the MID if your using 100% aftermarket stereo?
I didn't know my MID had any other function than stereo control.

I though the MID had the BCB function where you can check the consumption1 and 2, also set speed alert, and etc...

Having a mid allows me access to the OBC functions, e.g if I disconnect the the battery, I have no way of setting the clock other than re-installing the 16:9, same goes for other functions like consumption data etc. but you are right it is not 100% necessary.

Has anyone down graded from 16:9 satnav with DSP to high function MID?

Does any know if a MID will need to be coded to work if one was not fitted previous?
