Bilstein Shocks Clunking After 10000km!?!?

Hello,

I installed new Bilstein shocks from Bilstein Canada about 8 month ago and after a few weeks of cold weather here in Alberta the front once sound completely gone when going over a road with some patches of snow on it!

Is there something that I could have done while installing them to cause the shocks to destroy themselves or just got some bad shocks?

Thanks

Anything is possible.....did you re-use the old strut mounts or purchase new ones? Does it bounce excessively?

While its completely possible you could have a failed strut; your clunking is probably coming from the sway bar links....which are notorious for clunking when worn.

How many miles on the X? Any other recent suspension work done?

Clunking probably isn't from the shocks; you need to check out the rest of the bits involved. What all was replaced when the shocks were done? Who did the work? If it's only been 10k, and you had a shop do the work, maybe have them check over their work; maybe they failed to tighten something to the proper torque and it's worked its way loose. Or if you did the work...

That was my first gut feeling that something had come loose but I double checked everything and everything is rock solid and there is oil covering the exterior of the shock around where the shaft is.

When the shocks were done all the suspension was done. All the bushings and ball joints and the sway bar links also.
The top hats for the shocks were new also and the bearing at the top is also new.

Start with that next time! Yes, the damper is leaking through the seals and will need to be replaced. Check the warranty on them, as they should last longer than 8 months (cold weather or not).

Billies generally have lifetime warranty; if you bought them new, they should be covered.

My bad. Last question when the wheel turns from side to side the shock rubber boot turns also. Is that correct or did I put the top hat on wrong?

Thanks
