Steering column changes position on start

Just curious if there is any way to turn off the feature where the steering column goes up when you shut off the car and goes down when you start it? drives me nuts...
Just spent some time with autologic tool trying to figure out how to turn it off but with no success...

I I believe it can be coded off...I'm not sure off the top of my head which module it would be in though...

Why does it drive you nuts? It moves out if the way makin to easier to enter and exit the vehicle. If you set your memory seat position, it will go back to your driving position, without ever having to manually adjust it yourself.

The position of the steering column in the off position makes it very uncomfortable for me to turn on the ignition (I know how silly that sounds, but it is what it is). Now, i just read in the manual that you don't have to turn and hold the key while waiting for the engine to start - V8s have an automatic engine start once you turn the key... so this might help me a bit...
i am also worried about the wear on the steering column motor from moving it all the time...

Again, i know how all of this might sound weird to some people, but again, it is what it is...

Well IMO theres many bigger things to worry about with these trucks in the wear and tear department....but hey, to each their own.

Did you try looking in the zke module? I think its the "central body something or other" Pretty sure your steering column option should be in there somewhere

Can't agree more... this was just the first thing that jumped at me after owning it for two weeks...
I will have a look at the zke module and see if i can find how to disable it, but if not, i can live with it for sure.

NCS expert can dissable it, not sure about anything else. I doubt it's ZKE though. Almost sure this is GM3, general body module. Maybe key memory for you. It's most likely in comfort access.

If its still annoying after getting used to the quick release start features...you could also set a seat memory with the 123 buttons, and press it when you get seated etc...and as long as the door is open, all it takes is a quick one press of the button you programmed and the wheel will go down to where its comfortable to insert & turn the key.

If the door is closed you'll have to press & hold the memory button. As you see, there are multiple ways to deal with this minor annoyance you have with this feature many pre 1998 BMW owners would LOVE to be annoyed by.

In the 1998 e38 & e39... This convenience exit feature was added to the drivers seat module. If you owned a 1995-1997 five or seven series, you could retrofit this feature by just installing a new or used driver's seat switch from a 1998-up 5 or 7 series. Unfortunately, the e53 uses a different switch, so a swap from a pre 98 five/seven series won't help.

Qsilver,

Always enjoy your posts.

My wheel doesn't move after I kill the truck. It must have been coded off.

Interesting...I hope someone that has the software posts back what area communicates with this feature. If the fog lights can be coded to come on with the high beams...I'm sure this little feature has an on/off selection.
