Mine's a 2001 silver 3.0i but with gray interior. Had 131K when we got it and 18 months later with 165K. The previous owner(s) took very good care of it but unfortunately there was no maintenance history. Most people are quite surprised to learn its an '01. Fuel pump went out in addition to having to replace the driver's side door carrier and the Final Stage Relay. But overall it's still a solid build "truck" and and love how it handles; fun to drive.

Should you or your son's need guidance you'll find this forum most helpful.

Definitely try to locate the vehicle's maintenance history and I agree with several items mentioned already, especially window regulators, driver's door carrier, and expansion tank. I would also inquire about the front driveshaft and transfer case because of the short spline condition of the early driveshafts. Keep a close eye on those front CV boots and have them replaced at first signs of cracking. As long as there is grease in the boot, you don't have to worry about replacing the axle. Tensioner and idler pulleys on the serpentine belt seem to go around the mileage you're at too.

Things on the 3.0 that go that shouldn't. Oil Separator, oil filter housing gasket, window regulators, door handle carriage - drivers, CV boots at least in hot and dry AZ. After 8 years of having my 2001 x5, I finally found that Pelican Parts has the best parts. I got the following and they have NO dust and no rust and brake unbelievably great. I won't buy any other from now on.
