Many of us use H & R kit and some use Eibach. You can stay with the stock shocks with these springs. My shocks are holding up fine after a couple of years now. As with all lowering springs without changing the shocks, the ride quality will be negatively affected but you get improved handling. For X5s with rear air suspension, this can be lowered only by the dealer.

As already mentioned the majority of folks have gone with the H&R springs and shorter links in the rear. This is probably the best route if you want to lower your car but not spend a huge amount of money. Another option is to go for the AC Schnitzer suspension which include new shocks and springs (front), however the ACS kit is at least 2400USD . Before I went with the ACS kit I actually had the H&R springs and was pretty happy with it. Comparing the ACS kit and the H&R I'd say there's certainly not a 2000USD difference between the two. If you already have a sport suspension (from your post it seems you are owning a 4.6 which has SP) the ride comfort will not be drastically different after installing the H&R springs.
Once you've installed the H&R springs (front) and short links in the rear you can visit your BMW dealer (or independant BMW specialist) to have the rear leveled out/lowered via DIS (http://www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-170.html) Hth, Jan

I've gone with the Eibach spring the second time around. The H&R's I had initially did a good job in lowering the front and handling but was really harsh... Which is why I went with Eibach, not so low but didn't have the harsh ride...
I had the dealer lower the rear air suspension by 1" via DIS.
