Oil filter part

Today when I was removing the oil filter on my 4.4i a small spring and a tapered part about the size of a sewing thimble but with slots in it fell out. I replaced the filter but could not find where these parts belonged. Could anyone please help as I dont know how important these parts are, and how and where they fit.

Some have had luck getting help through the dealer to do the expensive repair, some have driven tens of thousands of miles without a repair and believe that it will not affect anything at all.

Thanks RickM5X3 for the information. You are dead right. My X5 is at my mechanics now and he is doing up a quote for me. As a new crate motor is $26000 here in Australia, I will definitely go ahead and have the faulty parts replaced.
I appreciate your quick response to my query, and am sorry I have not thanked you earlier.
