Timing Chain Guide Replacement--$300
I'm an aircraft mechanic so I never take anything apart that isn't totally necessary. I only removed the fan shroud, fan, and all the stuff attached to the timing cover. I took the valve covers off obviously but that's it. The truck was running fine when I started so I only replaced the guides themselves and didn't even replace the chains or remove them. They only have 127K on them anyway and look really beefy. Total cost is around $300 for the guides and tensioner and a couple of gaskets and o-rings.

that's good to know
 I need to do this soon on mine but I really don't want it to turn into too big a job! ie doing VANOS and all at the same time...however while im there it might be a good idea.

More information would help .
Did you use the timing tools to lock the camshafts and so on . Did you leave the chains in situ whilst changing the guides .

No I didn't use the tools as I never removed the chains at all. I changed the guides one at a time being sure not to allow the chain to slip. At one point I wedged a paint roller against the crankshaft sprocket and chain to make sure it didn't slip. The upper sprockets are pretty large and were in no danger of slipping.
I didn't change the camshaft chain tensioner guides as they would definitely require chain removal. They looked fine. If this turns out well, and I think it will, being able to do this job cheaply will make these vehicles more desirable. Mine is probably only worth $10K in this Houston market and a $2500-4000 timing chain guide replacement would have made it worth almost nothing.
