quick one - alternator number...

Hi all,

Looking at a rebuilt or replacement alternator for my ride - 2004 4.8is.

My long running saga re electrical issues may hopefully be put to bed after the stealer diagnosed a crook alternator (at $1600!).

Anyway, my trusted local auto-electrician reckons they can't get parts for the alternator so I need a replacement.

Ignoring for now the fact they I reckon they should be able to get parts, I quoted the part number 12317540994, which is off the Real OEM website. Old Dear on the other end of the line reckons she needs a 12 digit number and that that one is only the BMW part number which doesn't help her find me parts and/or a replacement alternator... She reckons there is a 12 digit number on the alternator itself...

Does anyone have a 12 digit number for the alternator that corresponds to the aformentioned Real OEM part number, or is she off with the fairies?

thanks

Agreed... They are all over the bay for $200 ( re-manufactured ) with the part number referenced above or 2 other part numbers, all 11 digit.

Are there any places close to you that re-build them?

You can do what Slick did and replace the voltage regulator with a new one, that includes the brushes and can be done for about 110, go on ECS website the BMW part number is there in the alternator section.

I see new Bosch alternators and Valeo's on ECS Tuning for around 250, did you double check to see if you have a 90a or 120amp, and do you have a Bosch or Valeo?

Hopefully your X didn't come with the "Water Cooled" Alternator.

I think alternators for our 4.8 should be 180 amp, yes? I'm going to change mine out this weekend as its only putting out 10.8 - 11.2 volts with everything on. See if it will help with some electrical gremlins I'm having...ugh!

Have googled around for someone who will repair rather than replace but perhaps those that do aren't the Internet types... Rang a couple too and they only replace...

Just need to know if there is a 12 digit number on the alternator. Big J maybe when you pull yours you could have a look? I can't pull mine just yet as in the middle of a house move and need the truck on the road.

Why don't you just buy the regulator and do it yourself. The job took me 30 min, and it was the first time i did it. I bought the whole voltage regulator just to be safe. Search for my thread. Search for Alternator, and my name.

Call this guy, or email him for a quote. This is dealer, but if you tell him you from Xoutpost car club, he gives a discount that beats the hell out of ECStuning.com.
