Big "J", you could be right. Is it normal to hear noise around gas cap area after you lock the car? Sometimes it lasts quite a while, but if I unlock the car, turn the key and the noise is gone. My 1st instinct is fuel pump on its way out. But dealer told me it could be e-vacuum testing.

I'll start with air intake, if not, then coil pack & fuel pump for dealer to check.

At least I won't got ripped off by those stealers, thanks to the great minds here.

I'm leaning towards the fuel pump being on its way out.... Same thing happened to me about a year ago.

Suggest you unplug the MAF before you do anything else. Your description is not uncommon for a faulty MAF. The test to eliminate the MAF is to unplug it and if the car runs normally the MAF is bad.

Hey Pap,

Good point! But what bothers me is, this 07' X3 doesn't throw my any code related to that.

The CPS went bad on my 01' X5 and the code pointed to intake CPS. Symptom looks the same except it doesn't stall on highway. After replacing it, running w/o any issue for 1.5 years already.

It looks like I gotta try one at a time, and wait for the problem recur. I basically held my breath for 2 hours on my way back from Boston, praying every minute don't die on me, don't die on me. Hate that.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

my experience with the crank position sensor comes from my audi, i never got a check engine light for it but my car use to act like it ran out of gas and cut off especially at low speeds and when it did stall on me it would take a while to start back it could be a minute or 3 hours

Defect Located. Problem Solved! Eccentric Shaft Sensor! Changed the valve cover gasket and spark plugs while there. Engine never dies again (2 days! Knocking the wood!)

Guess how much total I paid for parts & labor?
