Took them a while, but in the end they did REALLY GOOD.
You have now a brand new X. Do you sell it?

J.K.

This software update was calibrated differently in comparison to windows XP in the sense of quarts to gallons. So when the tech input 8 for 8-quarts, the system ran for 8-gallons. Needless to say the they filled the engine entirely with oil.
I'm not buying this explanation. At least not in the sense it was the Windows XP -> Windows 7 upgrade. Operating systems don't interface with the dealers systems, applications do. Now it could be do to the fact the application was also upgraded at the same time. But the OS itself did not cause this problem.

Not that it matters as they've resolved the problem.

Great news!
Sounds like it was worth the wait! Things seem to work out for the best most of the times...

Did you get any warranty on your new engine?

Holy crap very nice. Brand new engine, you cannot beat that. You should have gotten them to get you a brand new transmission too.

Congratulations and well done!!

It is great to hear both BMW and the dealer more than rectified the problem. I still had faith in BMW but your experience was troubling.

Enjoy your 'new' X!

Terminator. I did recently go in for an oil change at BMW northwest and at the same time I had my engine diagnosed for a loud whining noise that took place when the secondary air pump was on followed by a drop in rpm when it turned off which at times resulted in an engine stall. They kept the vehicle over the weekend and found that a technical bulletin came down for my vehicle which required the rebuild of my HVAC system for my new engine. They ordered the parts, set me up with a courtesy car and even took care of the oil change at no cost (engine is still under warranty from when they blew it so that took care of the parts and labor for the HVAC rebuild).

So all is well!

I thought the 4.8is didn't have a secondary air pump.

Wow. Glade to hear you got it all sorted out. This reminds me of my nightmare oil change story. I brought in my car to Fields BMW just north of Chicago for oil change. I picked up the car and drove home. I decided to check the oil level and noticed the level was way above the max line. I called the service department and they asked me to bring my car back in. Service manager checked and agreed it was overfilled and offered to give me another oil change. Since it was late in the day, they gave me a rental and said my car will be ready first thing in the morning. I picked up my car next morning. This time, I decided to check the oil level at the dealership and to my surprise it was overfilled again. Service manager called in the master mechanic and double checked and they both agreed it was overfilled. They apologized again and offered another oil change while I wait. Service manager came back accompanied by master mechanic. Service manager apologized once more and said my car is ready but this time it was done correctly. I asked them how could this happen twice. Service manager stated that they give the car back to the same mechanic to correct the problem. He overfilled again the second time. But for the third time, with master mechanic assisting with the oil change, he noticed a mistake on part of the mechanic doing the oil change. Apparently, he wasn’t inserting the dipstick all the way in. He will put in the dipstick in until the top seal hits the dipstick tube and by doing so will show one quart low. He added one more quart. I can’t imagine how many oil changes he has done incorrectly... Anyways, Fields BMW took care of everything and even offered next oil change for free. Since then I have learned to work on cars myself. If you want something done right, do it yourself as long as you know what you’re doing…
