replacing broken cigarette socket... how?
the cigarette lighter socket is broken somehow... it looks like the ring that holds it in place has broken in half. (like that when i bought the car) question is, how do i replace it? i started pulling the socket out, and there were quite a few connections on it that were very tight and i was worried about ripping something. anyone have to do this before? |

careful around that socket, it has full 12V from the battery, that can ZAP you... not pleasant feeling!!!... ask me how i know!!! hahaha pull the fuse for the lighter, to make sure it is off...
i have not done the cig lighter but do a search on this site about how to remove the HVAC module (the easiest step, no screws involved), then you can remove the A169 module, the one that says DSC - it is one solid, long module with a blue connector on the back... this will give you some visual insight into the cig lighter location... oh, also remove the ashtray, there might be some screws on the side under the ashtray... on one of my bimmers to remove ashtray, i had to press the lid in, and that action popped the ashtray out... i don't remember the E53 procedure... |

that info is scattered across the forum's pages... the manual lists the fuses and their locations... i get my info from the WDS, as the same fuse may cover diferrent item from year to year in the same car chassis...

to remove the ash tray, you simply pull it out.
I have the same issue with my socket too. Happened about a month ago. I just am thinking of crazy gluing 2 spots to hold it down. electrically its fine, just that when I remove a plug, the socket wants to come with.

Using the parts database usually gives you a great insight as to where all the nuts/bolts/screws/clips/etc are located (and how many if you look in the QTY column)...as well as how all the pieces fit together. Note #14 & #17 in the diagram below:
The encircled numbers in the illustration represents "hardware"...which in many of the diagrams (like this one) has it's own "key" within the illustrated diagram: RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.4i Center console/decor bottom parts (note #3 in diagram below) RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.4i Cigarette lighter / sockets BTW, there should be a fuse index located on the pull down door in the glovebox fuse area...and another index on the back of the cargo door for the rear fuses in the back:

Let me know if you figure it out.. I need to replace the bulb that lights up the ring and couldn't find a way to get it out.

i am bringing the x into the mechanic today, because i can only find the metal socket, but not the ring that surrounds it and lights up red. does that make sense? we'll see what they quote me.

If you just need to know the 11 digit BMW part nbr and the approx price...that could be found at the link in my reply above. There was a direct link to the diagram that has the part nbr index below it. Scroll down to #17 in the diagram at the following link for the 11 digit BMW part nbr and price: RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.4i Center console/decor bottom parts Doing another quick google search using the BMW 11 digit part nbr from realoem.com...I found another illustrated diagram on BMW of South Atlanta's website...its #12 in their diagram below...which they have advertised as costing $1:
