You'll be safe with approx 15.1 liters or 4 gallons. The coolant fluid capacity is not listed in my e53 owners manual...but my e38 & e39 owners manual (M62 & M62TU engines respectively) have it listed below as (includes cooling system & heater circuit):
- 13.2 (12.5) quarts (liters) = M62 engine e38 740iL
- 12.7 (12) quarts (liters) = M62TU engine e39 540iT
I recommend mixing the coolant/distilled water (50/50) first...then fill coolant expansion tank until needle rises to appropriate level. Any remaining unused coolant can be used to top off as you "bleed/burp" the system. I recommend keeping the container with any left-over mixed coolant handy in case you need to add a bit over the next few days as any trapped air makes it way back to the expansion tank which may require a quick top off of the system if your LOW COOLANT warning light comes on.
And always mix 50/50...coolant-to-distilled water (if not using a "pre-mix" coolant).
