I used a dolly to tow a junk '89 525i to the scrapper. Didn't think to take a picture of it until it was too late. The dolly was a beat-to-death rental; not too bad with the car on it, but made all kinds of noise when empty.

Got a whopping $166 for the 525i, sans drivetrain. Going price is $140 a ton. The engine & trans is going into my e28, when I get around to it. Stripped a bunch of other parts off it as well, but there doesn't seem to be a huge market for e34 parts.

Just thought I'd revive this thread to show what I was dragging around with the X5 last night...

Both cars have manual transmissions. Had to tow the e32 out to where my daughter was stranded with the e36 compact that had blown one of its spark plugs out.

that's a great looking setup! What are the specs on that trailer - length?

also couldn't quite tell from photo do you have larger mirrors attached?

thanks...

The caravan is 19'6" internal length. More like 25' hitch to rear bumper. She weighs in at around 5400lbs and tows like a dream. That is one of the benefits of a diesel though, all that torque is delivered from idle.

Yes, towing mirrors are needed as a legal requirement here in Australia. I use Milenco Aero 2, which are a European mirror renowned for their clarity, stability, and ease of fitment.

I've towed a few of these with my old 04 3.0. Handled the weight fine, just lacked the power needed to go up hills. I was down to 45 a few times on the highway coming up through Vermont.

So the 3.o handles it well? I just picked up an 03' 3.0 X5 and was worried that it might not tow my m3 around when i need it to. Glad to see it towed the e38 well!

It did alright. My trip was from central jersey to nh through the green mtns. The car and full hauler weighed in at almost 7k. So an m should be fine.
