Drives great when towing and never had a problem with the transmission. But I did suffer the dreaded front driveshaft and transfer case spline failure at 136,000 miles. Can't believe there hasn't been a recall on those yet. The tricky thing is if your trailer has LED taillights. Sometimes they don't draw enough current to tell the body computer that the turn signals are working. (It knows when you've got the trailer plugged into the harness!)

Yes, it's called "weight distribution". My hitch interface is a "Hensley Arrow" which incorporates mechanical (non friction) anti-sway with "weight distribution" spring bars that are adjusted by jack screws. The Hensley is kind of pricey at $2,700+. A little less expensive competitor which works on the same basis is called a "ProPride".
As the spring bars are tensioned the tongue weight is torqued to both the front axle of the X5 AND the Airstream axles. When I adjust the jack screws with my cordless drill one can actually see the torque loading the X5 front axle. The 2001 X5 has a tow rating of 6,000# with a tongue weight of 600# both weight bearing and weight distributed. In actuality my Airstream usually weighs in at 8,000+# with a tongue weight (which is distributed) of 1,000+#.
