I've been spending some time on the airstream forum, and saw you there too. Jeff

While enroute I use the X5 mirrors to see vehicles which are adjacent to the Airstream; the "McKesh" mirrors are adjusted such that I can see down the side and behind the Airstream to include the tandem wheels so that I can see where they are tracking as I turn or if I should have a tire problem. The X5 with "Sport Package" (wheels with 255 mm front and 285 mm rear tires, stiffer suspension and additional rear camber) is excellent as a tow vehicle. Other than Dinan (throttle body & engine/transmission software) I have made absolutely no modifications for towing. I installed the OEM receiver myself. I've been over the continental divide 3 times and CLIMBED out of the Hoover Dam area in 117 degree ambient temperature with no problem. The X5 is just a damn good tow vehicle. If I were to purchase today I would go with the diesel which wasn't available in 2001.

Yes its been awhile. Anymore I only use the X5 to tow the Airstream. Since my other vehicles are not capable of towing I see no reason for putting miles on the X5 just to wear it out; and because I don't drive it that much it hasn't been on my mind to visit this website.

Twice a year I pull our Cobalt 252 boat with our 4.6is. About 6000#s with trailer for a few miles and then the boat ramp. It does fine even with a possible ailing TC.

I tow my ski boat often, and also having just built a new house last year, often tow some equipment like excavators, skid steer loaders etc from the city out to our place in the country. X5 works great for towing even up to 3000kg, but it does get a bit thirsty.
![]() I also towed this over 100 miles across a small mountain range once:

I used a dolly to tow a junk '89 525i to the scrapper. Didn't think to take a picture of it until it was too late. The dolly was a beat-to-death rental; not too bad with the car on it, but made all kinds of noise when empty.
Got a whopping $166 for the 525i, sans drivetrain. Going price is $140 a ton. The engine & trans is going into my e28, when I get around to it. Stripped a bunch of other parts off it as well, but there doesn't seem to be a huge market for e34 parts.
