I am curious about the "low oil" you mentioned in the beginning. Was that "normal consumption" since the last oil change? If it was excessive, where did it go?

Pulling the engine is the easy way to do that job. Take off both oil pans, and clean them out. The oil pump pick-up screen is easy to clean, then. To be extra safe, take off the oil pump, disassemble it, clean it out good, reassemble and re-install. The screen should have kept any junk out of the pump, but don't take ay chances.

Best wishes!

Yeah it's all fixed now and running fine.

The timing chain guides were all broken up so they were replaced along with the main chain and oil pickup pipe which was blocked up with plastic bits. After all off that the oil and filter was changed, we ran out for a while then changed then again.

That was about 7k miles ago and its not missed a beat since.

On a different note, the gearbox gave up soon after that but after having that rebuilt I think I've now sorted ask of the 'big' potential problems
