Calling all tranny experts

Headed out for a nice cruise today with the guys when I decided to do a 2nd gear hard pull going into to third. But as I up shifted I let go on the gas while switching gears and the floored it but I guess the tranny didnt get into gear and the rpm went up to 2.5-3k and made a screeching grinding noise then caught on. Question here is has anyone ever had this problem? Or is somthing wrong with my tranny? Also to mention my tranny fluid has never been changed. Would appreciate everyone's thoughts don't be afraid to share thoughts thanks.
