Flash light, long small pry bar, 3 hands and do the best you can through the grill.
Good Luck

There was a recent post about how to get into a locked X by opening the hood through the grill. I tried it unsuccessfully for fun. I didn't try that hard so maybe that is why I didn't figure it out. I would call a dealer or good indy and get some input as they must see at some frequency level. Hopefully, someone will respond that has done it and can provide the details. I don't recall a pry bar being involved.

It's for e39, but almost every BMW is similar. The e-39 has the pull-up latch on the left of the grille, the e-53 on the right (as you look at the front of the car). Here is a linky.

GL

P.S.: I just replaced the cable a few days ago. Take a look at this post, there are some pics and it might give you clues how to actuate the lever.

The hood release cable is in two sections, joining near the suspension turret under the bonnet.
Mine had let go at the nipple by the release handle in the footwell.
So by removing the release handle assy, I was able to get hold of the end of the cable and pop the hood.
