Fuel Cap .... can't tighten up enough

Hi guys

Lately i can't really tighten up my fuel cap like the way it should, you know, how you turn it clockwise and it will make some ticking noise so you know that it's been tighten up good!!!

This is on a 02 X5 4.4 , do i need a new fuel cap?

Thanks

Yes, probably you need a new fuel cap.

If you don't know now...you will when the SES light comes on.

I don't think the cap is supposed to click, my 02 4.6is cap does not click, take a closer look at the way it's made and you'll see what I mean.

Quote from dealer when he was doing the vehicle delivery instruction: "Make sure you cap clicks three times so you don't get a SEL because it is not tight enough."

My cap has clicked ever since!

It may vary. My e38's fuel cap doesn't click, my e39's & e53's fuel cap did/does click.

no click

did click

I have a 2002 4.6 and the cap clicks. If it used to click and no longer does and you have driven it for some time the way it is and no dash warning than I would guess it is working fine. I would still get a new cap, not that expensive, peace of mind and I like the click.

So in other words...the "click, click, click" is like hearing "yes, yes, yessss"...you know that you've successfully screwed it....on.

Last time I got gas I was there for 4 hours clicking the cap--oh what a night! Or maybe it was 4 minutes.

4 hours or 4 minutes...either way sounds like it was pure bliss...
