I have removed the mid/stereo and cd player mny times in the past, its the wood trim that I'm needing to remove so I can wrap that trim piece. realoem does not show how the trim is attached. trust me, it was the first place I looked to see how the wood trim on the rear seat cup holders and on the cd player cover was held on.
No idea how to get off safely.

off internet. e-bay I believe. searched for "3m 1080 brushed aluminum" and got lots of good results. bought two sheets of 5ft x 2ft. great great stuff to use. they even have black aluminum. I do lke the silver brushed aluminum tho. very much.
its not a kit, so you need to cut, wrap and make pretty. It takes a fair bit of time to do it correct. use a heat gun at times too.

You need the dremel tool to cut off that lock washer in order to remove the trim piece, or pry it off the pin one tooth at a time.
Here is the quote from my link thread above:
"Now you can work on the door for the cassette or business CD. The cover is held on to the door itself with 3 little clips that press on to three post. You will destroy these clips no matter how you remove them so I just cut mine off with a dremmel tool. The replacement part# is 51-45-8-220-836."

TMV, thanks. I figure I'll just wrap the rear cup holder trim once I have to take it out to do the center console (easier to remove trim screws at that point), but as for the cd player, I was hoping it was a bit easier removal than having to destroy those clips to get the trim off. BUT I can't cover it properly when still installed, so I guess I'm buying 3 new clips to do it correctly
I seen the write up for the E39 but from looking at my car, I noticed it seems a slightly bit different of mounting points, so I was curious if the procedure was different. Guess not.

Cheers.

for anyone else trying to figure out how to remove the single disc CD player lid to remove the trim, or to wrap it (Like I did) its actually very easy.

remove MID and CD player and on the sides you will see two retaining lips you just need to unlatch and the entire cd player lid and its housing slide out. SUPER simple.

Nice work!
Have been thinking about wrapping my trim in gloss black... how long did it take you to wrap the trim?

Both if possible, I'm real interested to see how the corners look as well as how its tucked on the back. Some vinyl jobs I've seen with lower quality vinyl don't show well on the corners (you see crinkle lines and stuff)

Do you use any 3m primer 94 or any glue on the backside vinyl that is tucked, so it stays down for good and wont lift?

I'm an absolute perfectionist so the close ups will definitely tell me whether its up to my snuff or just remove trims and have them painted professionally at a shop.

RB, you can spend a bit extra time on this and with a heat gun and blade, make the vinyl wrap look insanely good. I did a rush job on the corners of this and the underside in all honesty, but mainly cause I NEVER open the cd player lid since I do not use the cd player.
all other trim pannels are wrapped amazingly fine.

as for primer, nope. I've not used it on either car and the vinyl has not lifted since installed a few weeks ago. I've got it fitting tightly but using a heat gun can be useful too. Especially on areas where the rounded edges meet corners.
But honestly this stuff is amazingly built. You can pull on it to remove wrinkles and pull here a bit, adn there a bit and spread the wrinkles over the area, adn yet magically the lines of the brushed aluminum look do NOT skew. simply amazing product.
It's attached by pressure. The harder you rub it on, the better it sticks (Not that its not sticky anyhow, but you'll see what I mean).

RB, for reference of how well it wraps around edges adn corners, look at the trim pieces to the SIDES of the cd player lid. you can see how well it wraps around and very minimal wrinkling, and those two pieces wer my FIRST I've ever wrapped. my skills have gone exponentially better (try the overhead console trim piece and gear shifter, holy crap). I'm very confident now. I just wanted to rush the cd player trim at the moment cause it was bothering me that it was still wod trim and the rest was brushed alum. I'll go back and re-do it if I ever care, but I never see the edges of the cd player lid trim anyhow.

Also attached of how the trim looks on the back, I could have left more, but the 3M material sticks very well when you use the proper tools and I was not worried about it shrinking or pulling back off. I've had it in my cars for weeks now with bot HOT and cold weather and its not moved a centimeter.
yellow tool is installment tool for rubbing teh thim on parts. its soft/but firm, plastic.
