Up through 2003 models, towing with one axle lifted isn't a problem. BMW publishes a limit of 30 mph and 95 miles maximum for towing an X5 like that. Follow that guidance and you won't harm your transfer case or anything else. BMW recommend only wheel lift equipment, but that is to avoid body damage, nothing mechanical in nature. Now, if they didn't put it in neutral then they would have just skidded it, and that isn't great but it is a tire issue, not a mechanical issue. Bet you they would have done the same or worse putting it on a flat deck. So, why was it being towed? Is your current problem related to that failure, and nothing to do with being towed?

They may have done you a favor by dragging the fronts and then putting them on a dolly than dragging them on all fours up a flatbed

Ok, so all the lights are gone and the result if the dragged is they missed up my front alignment, the steering whelk is not centered and I have toe in therefore the sound of rubber against rubber at low speed. I wll take it in for alignment and see what happen after.

Apparently the OP does not want to divulge the reason for the tow in the first place.
