The diesels have a sweeping "MPG" gauge as standard but it works in reverse from this - the lower the needle reading, the better the "mileage". This is because it's reading fuel used for a fixed distance (l/100km), so our game is to keep the needle as far to the left (reading lower) as possible.

*edit* Just Googled the OEM dash image - looks like the MPG gauge is similar to the diesel version, with the better consumption being on the left. I assumed the reverse from your use of the term "pegged" (usually meaning hard to the max value. - and usually this is to the right)
