Well now I know who to go to for help chaising down weird clunks and rattles when they start showing up!

As for the block heater....My X has the cold weather package, so it does have a block heater, and thus, no heating pad on the pan needed. I would assume there's a space for a block heater you could put in. It usually jsut requires removal of a plug on the side of the block and in goes the heater. A block heater is the sort of item you should bundle in with a cooling system flush/refresh as it's going to require at least some of the coolant be drained.

Do you have a dealer-installed block heater? BMW doesn't recommend or offer them, and the cold weather package didn't include an immersion heater AFAIK. That is why some have gone to the stick-on silicon pad heaters. I have used them on larger engines, but never installed one on a BMW. All of my 3.0 engines were fine starting at -30C when I was travelling north of Vancouver, but I didn't have to do it day after day.

Interesting! I didn't know that....Just always assumed it to be part of the Cold climate package! My truck was leased for a year by an elderly Chinese couple who had the dealer do everything on it before I got it. It may very well be an aftermarket/after sale item then....but will have been installed by the dealer.

A double-double - that I can afford!

That's very interesting, when I called the dealer in Victoria before we left, they told me there was nothing available for the X5 (at least the 3.0i, I don't know about the others) and advised that I call the dealer in Winnipeg to see "what the locals do". I called them a few weeks ago and was advised that the only option was the heating pad...I wonder if I have the cold weather package - what else is included in it? I just had the cooling system cleaned and flushed to ensure it was good to go for the drive out here so I don't really want to open it up again...

That was also what I had read, that the 3.0i didn't actually need anything just a strong battery (which I just replaced at the end of March)
