Have you tried the transmission reset procedure? It is said that it cures the problem, at least temporarily. With the key in the position just before starting the car, press the accelerator to the floor, you should feel a slight click. Hold it there for 40-50 seconds and then start the car, but make sure you move forward, not reverse.

I did it and it improved things a little but I am not sure if it is the real fix.
New soft ware for the gearbox? I wonder if they charge you for that or just labor. My suspension fund is taking a big hit because of having to replace my alternator. Maybe that will be next.

For $300 put the Dinan tranny software on. It totally eliminates the 2-1 shift issue. I had the latest software from BMW on my 2003 4.6is prior and it still had the problem. Now that I have the Dinan version it's perfectly smooth. Also, sport mode is a beast!

I'm not a big Dinan guy, think most of their stuff is overpriced for what you get. But this is very much worth it. Probably will save my tranny and TC, at least for a while.

I think you just jinxed me. I used to have the 2-1 but that all disappeard with a pan drop, filter change and full fluid interchange.

Just yesterday, I'm getting some harsh shifting from 1 -2 . Literally, the opposite with me needing to step on the brakes due to a lurch...

lol sorry man. did you knock on wood when u did the tranny fluid change?

I dont think there is a tranny software update for the 4.8is. nothing on dinan's website.

Im tempted to change the fluid, but reading all these horror stories, it just might be better to live with it.

FWIW, I had no qualms as I've proably done 4 or 5 bolt drain refills prior + at least 1 pan drop, no filter change .

The 2-1 started sometime ago and I was due for my pan drip, filter change anyhow. This time we just did the whole fluid. I can't recall but I think we used around 11 quarts. That made my 2-1 go away FWIW..

Somewhere, don't remember when, I had a post about my transmission discoveries. Here's what I did. I changed the filter. I did a "flush" of the oil so that it was at least 90% new all the way through the system. I changed the temperature probe. I changed the solenoids. All together, issues went away.
