Is your X5 living with the cancer?

I am talking about the jolt from the tranny going from second to first....2-1.

Are you living with it?

I always thought that when a car got cancer it was because the car started to rust.

There are lots of types of cancer and many threads about similar symptoms. Do a search of transmission summary to read more. I have never read of one specific reason that is the cause so it is not something to throw parts at without diagnosis, and just like cancer, get a second opinion before going forward.

Mine used to have a hard down shift from 2-1 when coming to a stop.
It was most pronounced when it was a 'rolling stop'. If I grannied it by coming to a complete stop every time, it rarely did it.

Last year as part of my overhaul of my X5 I complete an AT filter change and fluid change with the BMW spec fluid. Since then, I haven't felt the dreaded hard downshift.

Not sure if that will help your problem, but it did help mine.

Good luck

No at 135k, BUT the first owner had the tranny replaced under warranty at 50k and since then it has had the fluid changed every 30-40k.

I have the same symptom, in my X5. I was told that new software for the gearbox would fix it, but I didn't get the chance to take it to the dealer to do it.

Have you tried the transmission reset procedure? It is said that it cures the problem, at least temporarily. With the key in the position just before starting the car, press the accelerator to the floor, you should feel a slight click. Hold it there for 40-50 seconds and then start the car, but make sure you move forward, not reverse.

I did it and it improved things a little but I am not sure if it is the real fix.
