5w-40 didn't do any good...maybe 10% better?

CCV's: one was split but that didn't help anything anyway.

During the summer months, I actually run the "M" oil in my 3.0 X5. I believe it is 10W-60. Living in Texas as you do, the 100+ degree days result in noticeable consumption of the normal 5W-30, to the tune of about 1 quart every 1000 miles. With the 10W-60, I usually go 2000 miles on a quart and have a lot higher confidence level in engine protection while towing the boat. There's just a little slower engine cranking on a cool start, but no measurable drop in fuel mileage.

2002 X5 3.0 237,000 miles
2004 325i 106,000 miles

My 25yr-experienced mechanic had no idea that oil expanded when hot and that the Max level on the dipstick should not be reached except when the vehicle is at it's maximum operating temperature.

This is air-cooled Porsche 911 information as the dry-sump tanks & subsequent oil level should only be checked with the engine idling, at max temperature, on flat ground.

My X is a native Texan and always drinks 5-30 and never need a kicker between oil changes. I am always haulin' a#s but don't have a hitch or a boat.

Not really: the mechanic had over-filled my car by a quart by "filling" (topping off) oil on a hot day on a cold engine.

Porsche 911 engines have a dry sump oil system which is why the engine has to be running to determine the oil level, but our engines are not dry sump, so the engine has to be off when checking the level.

yes on the 911 as I own two air cooled cars, but when checking to top-off your X5's oil on a 102 degree day, do so when the engine's hot, not cold. It will register a difference.
