Just saw your EDIT. That gives me hope the DSP version will work! Thanks!

you have a US spec 4.6iS - DSP is standard on those. Depending on the model of the DSP amp fitted, it can be a digital DSP or an analogue DSP, even though it sounds funny - analogue digital... the reason that your controls work is because one of the wires in the 3-pin connectors is an iBus line, the other two wires are power. the iBus controls the entertainment systems in the car (as well as other aspects)

if connecting the 6-pin connector did not yield the sound, it is obvious that you need to use the coax cable (RG-174 with SMB connector).

that's all...

Thanks for all of the help everyone. DSP version works just fine. Only issue now is the big volume difference between the iPod an radio or CD player. Tried a number of things I found on the net, but no luck. It's livable though. Thanks again.

It's good to hear you have everything sorted out.

As far as your volume issues I have been there before. I have hooked up many different kinds of AV gear into stock BMW Screens/Amps ect.

You can fix your volume issue with a line level driver.

You connect the line level driver to power and ground and you feed you the signal from your device into the line driver. The driver unit has potentiometers that can be adjusted to increase the sound output beyond what is available on you device. They are very handy for OEM Audio integration.

I first came upon them when I was integrating my mediagate into my E38. For audio I tapped into the tape signal from the headunit for the DSP amp. I created RCA's on that circuit so I can hit tape mode and it delivers the audio from my mediagate into the stereo. I noticed right away volume and bass response was lacking so I wired in a line driver and after some tweaking full bass response and volume was achieved.

JL makes a unit with a remote volume knob as well for further adjustment of the unit when hidden back in the changer area out of reach.

CL-RLC - Car Audio - OEM Interface - System Expansion - JL Audio

AudioControl Make an excellent unit as well the Overdrive.

I'm sure you can attain the sound your looking for from you Ipod integration with one of the line driver options available on the market.

Best of luck on your adventure

Thanks Lexicon! If I get really ambitious, I'll give it a try!
