Exclamation Working key stolen, Help please

I bought my 03 X5 about alittle over a month ago with one working key and one that starts the car but wont unlock doors. Last night someone stole the wifes hoodie with keys in pocket. Unfortunately that was the only key remote that worked. Ive drove many times with the nonworking key in hope that it would recharge with no luck. I was wondering if I should try to change the battery in the one remaining key or will that affect the ignition part of the key. Can I find the battery at a local auto parts store? What should I do? Ive read about nav ignition imobilization. Im kinda lost right now and dont want to make numerous trips to the dealer at over 1 1/2 hour drive one way. Helpful comments appreciated. Thanks

Sorry to hear that. Are you sure you can't stick the key in the driver side door handle and unlock the doors? I have one with a dead battery but it can still unlock/lock the doors manually.

Yes. The remaining key still works in the key hole and still starts the car but the keyless entry wont work. So if it still starts the car is it safe to say that its still programed and just needs a new batt? Id hate to change the batt in it and for it not to work at all after I did that? I dont have a key with working keyless entry so I dont think Id be able to program the key if it lost program?

The battery in the remaining might be dead or it might just lost sync with the car. You can initialized it to make sure. Check the "How-to's" for procedure.
Changing the battery will not affect the ignition system. There's article about what battery to get and how to change it on Xoutpost (from mrbmwX5) You can not get the battery from auto part store.
You can order new master key from the dealer. It costs me $185 for it from a local dealer. Yours will be different depend on dealer's mark-up. Need to show ID and proof of ownership, and takes about 2 days.

Ditto above...have you tried reintializing the remote key? It'd be a good thing to do anyways...because it will cancel the missing remote's ability to lock/unlock remotely.

Below are the instructions I've posted many times before on multiple BMW forums...follow every step as written, don't skip, fudge, combine etc. If the key's battery is charged, then you shouldn't have a problem. And when you had both remotes, the one you have now may have been absent when the "working" remote was reinitialized at one point. Did you ever try reintiializing both remotes during the same session when you had them?

TIP: KL R=ignition position 1

Don't confuse/conflate the 3 features deigned into the remote keys. They're all independent systems that work in conjunction or tandem with each other...but are yet separate systems. Many owners mix EWS, FZV, & DWA functions into one, but a you can see in the info below..there's differences (especially EWS).

Thanks TMV. Im going to try to re-sync the key later this evening. I have a battery in my ol 325i key that was totaled about 2 months ago, so Ill try to swap them out if sync dont work. Ive seen the battery that I need on line so I guess Ill order one also. Just didnt want to change the batt and screw myself by not being able to start the car.

Yep First try to resync the key, The good for you part about that if it works as well is that the other key that you got stolen will unsync so he cant use the remote.

They try replacing the battery, you just need to get a razor and cut around the key and you can open it up and replace the battery.

If no luck after all that try again.

If no luck then it may be a new key.

Source: done all of that before
