Rain sensing wipers

Rained here the other day and wipers did not come on automatically. Does the rain sensor need to be activated/turned on and if so how do I do that. If its always on I guess I'm screwed.

To activate, you move the stalk up to position 1. You can leave it there permanently. If still not working, check the outside and see if the sensor is still making contact with the glass. Make sure you dont see any bubbles.

Correctomundo on the move it back/reset it for us older E53s...it is the anti-car wash prevention setting that BMW built in.

Our ol'X has never been through a car wash, but I understand the logic.

Dude!!! Awesome. I'm not normally concerned about whether all my brain cells have managed to cross the void and shake hands, but I never realized that was why the req. to work the switch. I had a Toy Avalon for awhile and it'd trigger at the car wash. Annoying but soon anticipated result. Hehe. Cool.

that is annoying feature indeed - just turn off the wipers for the car wash... it should be like auto lights - once in auto position, you don't have to touch again... ever... i would even go a step further and would keep on at all the times, even when ignition is off - then, the rain sensing feature can close the sunroof and windows if rain in detected and i am not aroound the car... but... wishfull thinking....
