Theres a thread about Splitting them by baking them in oven to soften the glue.
If you have a bumper with headlamp washers then you would have to remove the bumper to take the headlights out. If you dont then you can just wiggle them out. I wouldnt just paint the headlight from the outside because it just looks terrible. Taking them apart is the only way im seeing. I always wanted to do it to mine but i was always afraid of the baking part, and i have headlamp wahers. Ill just man up i guess and do it sometime soon.

As you own a 2006 then you need to remove the bumper, pull the headlights, buy/use a Dremel to cut open the lights and then use it to cut out the amber plastic bits. Then you stick/seal the headlights back together, reinstall the lights and bumper and you are all done.

Search all threads start by mrbmwx5 and you will find a thread on how he open the facelift headlights with baking method. Or just use the dremel method as zulu95 suggested. I have the dremel tool if you want to be a Guinea Pig.
