Transmission issues

My 2003 BMW 4.4 automatic is giving me a surging randomly every five seconds or so with the throttle depressed. If I keep the throttle steady the RPM goes up and back down up and back down constantly about every five seconds so I'm assuming the transmission is slipping. It also shutters very badly at lower speeds. It clearly slips under low-pressure application but not under high-pressure as if I had the gas down more than halfway and taking off hard no slippage it all.

Is there a pressure valve or something along those lines that is common to go bad without having to rebuild the whole transmission?

My 05 just started doing something similar, at low speeds driving city streets it feels like transmission keeps shifting up and down... At highways speeds it does fine.. I will post more if I find out reason..

I bought an X5 back in April that the seller claimed "needed transmission replaced." I couldn't tell there was any fluid leaking, but after checking it was pretty low. New gasket, filter, and topped up fluid and shockingly it was fine. When fluid was low it slipped, missed shifts and jerked into gear, and squeaked on occasion. Start with the simple stuff. Some shops like Aamco will even scan codes and diagnose for free.

Id order a filter kit and change the fluid. You'll only get about 4 quarts out so Id drain and swap the filter, refill and then after a couple thousand miles simply drain and refill.
