It *is* a six speed.

I believe that as well, i feel uneasy when all the weight of the car is resting on something in the gearbox.

I have a habit of pulling mine always

To answer most of the questions (terminator, thanks for the info... Always appreciated). I just double checked if the key would come out in drive, yes, it did... However, car will not start again until I put the shifter into park.

Just went to a body shop, he says, he should be able to straighten out the hatch. Keeping my fingers crossed! Waiting on the estimate though.

Oh and I used to always pull the hand brake, until the thing broke on me, after I bitched enough at BMW, they fixed it under warranty... I didn't want to go through that again, and I was on a fairly level surface

That sucks. I never leave the driver seat without the hand brake engaged, regardless of AT or MT.

Oi, catch catch a break can you? haha. Well it doesnt look TOO bad, but enough to cost some dough. Hopefully the shop will just see what needs to be straightened out and go from there.

As far an engaging the parking brake to reduce stress on the tranny... I beleive JCL covered that at one point and explained when the X is in Park or any auto tranny, there is a Pawl that is engaged that essentially locks the tranny so it doesnt place the stress on the gears. Engaging it does reduce the rolling forward/backward effect, but as far as reducing stress on the tranny, it doesn't.

I ALWAYS engage the handbrake before putting a vehicle into park and shutting off the vehicle. Piece of mind I guess. Well that and no stress on the tranny as the vehicle no longer "rocks and rests" on the tranny selector stick. No hard "thunk" when pulling out of Park on a hill.
