2001 x steering colum up and down no longer goes up and down

So the other day it stopped going up and down. upon investigation the motor works fine but it seems the drive cable had detched someone or broke. I got up in there to take a look but could not pull the drive motor off as i did not have the correct torx size to remove it but before i go that far has anyone had this happen and have solutions

thanks

I'm interested in this as well. Does anyone know of a good resource for those who are new to the whole power tilt / telescopic steering wheel thing? Something with diagrams, or a general explanation of how it works? My '01 makes popping noises every time I turn the car on / off and it moves into / out of place. I want to look at it before it breaks completely, but I don't know where to start

Download this PDF & see pages 59 & 60: http://bmwmotorsports.org/BMW_docs/X...lectronics.pdf

And if you missed it...a forum member just posted a bunch of updated BMW technical docs...plus many new docs that explain many of BMW's new technologies, engines, and transmissions, etc.

I would highly suggest downloading everyone of them and save them to a folder and back the data up on multiple CPUs, tablets, Internet storage, etc. you may not own a BMW that has some of the info yet...but if you stay with the brand...you may end up with one and you'll have this priceless info.

This info is dropped upon us so few times...& when t does one should move quickly to save it...many times it gets scrubbed from the net.

Here's a direct link to the thread with the new BMW "university docs": http://www.xoutpost.com/947141-post1.html

driver seat and steering column is serving by one relay, which located in glove-box.

downloaded all those docs. however the one i found just shows the diagram not whether or not i can replace just the cable or i have to buy the whole motor . Waiting on my friend at bmw to answer this question before i go pulling this all apart

on a side not doesn't anyone know how to lower the colume so it stays at one height? that would be fine by me i hate that it always raised itself when i turned the truck off

May be confusing my chassis or even brands here, but think on this car that's a key programmable option that can be assigned by dealer or qualified indy/shad tree mech.

Edit to add: did you hotwire the motor or what to determine it works and the wire is the fault? My telescoping has been dead for a while and I've been too lazy to deal with it.

Great post, will check this, as mine doesn't work, but the power seat does. I'm short, so I'd LOVE to get it working again.

Does anyone know if the auto up and down can be disabled?
I would like to just have the adjustment lever functional but no auto up and down.
