Well my night sucked

Long story short, my X rolled into a pole.

Stopped at a gas station to buy my brother cigarettes (I don't even smoke) I was in rush and forgot to put in park. Turned car off, pulled key out of ignition.. Went inside little convenience store.. All of a sudden I heard CRACK! Bam, rolled backwards into a pole...

PISSED.

here are the aftermath pics. Going for estimate tomorrow. My rear hatch will
Likely need to be replaced too. Fml

I've been there! Do you have a stock shift knob? On my old accord, changing the shift knob disabled the interlock. One night, same thing except I was on a hill and rolled into another car.

Nope. All stock shift knob.

I guess I'm lucky it didn't hit anyone, or another car.

Fuckin A man! All jokes aside, if it was a 6-speed you'd have that handbrake engaged anyway so this wouldn't have happened!

And you went to buy your brother smokes? Is he like really young or something, I'm assuming he has his own car/ID, etc, I never really knew how old he was, I was wondering why you had to go take him to get cigs?

Sucks man, let me know how you do at the estimate today, I guess you may be getting a 4.8 rear valance sooner than thought?

recently, like last few years, i developed a habbit of pulling a handbrake when i park a car...

i am still concerned about the key coming out while the car is in gear... Nazario, can you repeat that stunt - can you pull the key out while in gear?

the key cylinder has a little hole on the tumbler that allows to pull the cylinder out by inserting a rigid piece of wire... one of the anti-theft features of the key cylinder is that there is a little plastic, pre-notched "tab" inside that can break if too much force applied to the cylinder, as if somebody is using a screwdriver to turn the cylinder in a theft attempt...

sometimes the stupid tab can break off even with a regular key usage... the repair should be relatively easy but when the tab breaks off, it can be close to a grand, as the repair needs to be carried out by the dealer as it is one of the alarm/anti-theft things... unless you can find used core with the keys that you could live with diffrent keys for alarm and for ignition... to be honest, not sure how it would work with two sets of keys, given that the keys have an antenna now that talks to the ignition circuitry...

here is a video

How to remove your broken ignition barrel(video!)

That's why I made sure to stay in the habit of pulling the handbrake every time, even in an automatic. It's just good practice

+1

I understand that this decreases strain on the automatic transmission as well. Hopefully, the next door neighbors appreciate 7 years of this practice when they bought my previous X5 with 100k on the ticker.
