Check Engine light cleared itself

I replaced the left bank Cam cover a couple of weeks back and long story short I got the check engine light shortly after driving it for the first time. I left the cam sensor gasket loose during install so that it could seat properly and forgot to tighten it down. I tightened that down and everything seemed to function properly again. I was sure that that was the cause of the check engine light as that is all I replaced and it was an obvious cause...... (+ my diagnostic software was still on its way from Romania) - I may have even got a dash message "Engine vacuum" or something like that...... or maybe I was dreaming

About a week later the check engine light just extinguished itself. So to the gurus. Does it realise the error has been rectified after a certain number of cycles? or has it just given up on trying to get me to take notice of it?

check engine light comes on under certain conditions: some conditions never set it off, some conditions have to cross either severity threshold or number of occurences, and some will throw the light on immideately...

by the same token, some check engine lights will stay on regardless if the error had been rectified or not, some will clear instantly once the problem is fixed and some will take some time (number of error-free cycles and/or miles driven/gallons of fuel consumed)...

in your case it is obvious that you had so many cycles error-free, so the light shut off... once you get your cable, you will be able to connect to the car and read the specific error that had set off the light (if it is still stored in thememory) and even erase it...

What I would suggest, when you get to the error screen (and each module has its own error memory), either print it to the paper, or to a PDF. I use BullZIP PDF writer utility, it is free and it gives you a PDF without any markings on it... This way, you will have a "hard" copy of the error, and if something pops up again, you can always fall back and see what you had initially - just a nice baseline...
