FSR Location?

Hi Guys,

I have a battery drain issue and I have heard my fan running on after the truck has been shut off. I have also heard the fan speed change randomly while in operation so I want to change out the FSR.

Someone have a general location for me to find the piece and what needs to be removed to get to it?

Cheers
Bernie

Check out the 3 links at the top of the page (in the blue border just beneath the Xoutpost banner) that are titled ARTICLES - HOW TOs - FAQs.

There has got to be a DIY in one of those threads...if not, just google it...because this is one of the major maladies of the e39 & e53 HVAC systems. So much so...I'd bet that there's probably multiple videos on Youtube, as well.

Example: under ARTICLES, I scrolled down to ELECTRONIC, and found this DIY on FSR/FSU replacement which has just what you asked for :

And most here will tell you to replace it with an OEM unit. The E-bay specials only last about 3 mos to 1 yr. I put 2 E-bay FSRs in my X (seller sent a new unit after the 1 replacement FSR failed, lasted 3 mos, 2nd one lasted 6 mos). the OEM unit costs around 3 times as much but has lasted almost 3 yrs now.

Yes there are times when aftermarket, eBay items don't work. I bought Schrader valves off eBay for my AC system and the high side one failed after a couple of weeks. This is something that I will want the original part for. Upgraded version of course and thanks for the tip and experience.

I second this, I changed mine in Dec (it was cold with no working fan in my case. You can mostly stay work on a highway drive however). Fortunately it doesn't take but 30 minutes on an E53 (the Xoutpost links, info & photographs are enough). You don't need to remove the glove box. A good trouble light will help.

The original OEM part was made by Valeo and is sometimes co-branded with other mfr's. If you have a 10+ year old one, it's all metal.

A current, new correct / genuine BMW one is marked Valeo/Sitronic and is made in Germany. Plastic base (the mounting / plug end) and metal heat sink. They also have date codes, a good want to also confirm that you have a new part.

There are some unknown origin parts on Ebay. Buy new and genuine for this, believe me you don't want it to fail in winter (I and other friends have experienced this). For those in a hot place, I suppose no fan in blazing heat would be equally less pleasant.

Yeah , my 2nd replacement E-bay FSR failed on a scorching hot 2 week road trip out in Galvaston,TX (I was living in FL at the time). It rained on and off during the 2 weeks in TX, myself and 4 passengers roasted/sweat the whole time, could not see out the windows because they were covered in moisture most of the time. Almost wrecked out my X during a rainstorm because I couldn't see. Not good economics, save $80 on a part and wreck an X. NEVER again! I learned not to road trip without tools too.
