converting from 01ish cargo cover to 04-06 one questions

reading around in the articles on this. I just want to confirm some things as mine didn't come with a cover at ALL.

basically, to use the 04-06 cover in the earlier models I need to replace the top pieces that the cover would sit in right?

is there any other trim pieces that need to be replaced?? do the parts that make the cover look flush when installed come with the cover or are they separate parts as well? like there's two little trims that pop out, then you pull out the cover, and you're left with the gaping ugly "wow, they are missing pieces" holes like I have now in my 2001 x5??

where does the cover attach when its fully extended?

Not exactly sure what your search turned up (& a pic is worth a thousand words)...but if you are referring to #15 in the diagram below (the cargo cover/roller blind) for the 8/2003-up X5 (what you see is what you get)...its one piece.

Since I used my VIN to pull up this diagram (12/2005 build date)...any item in the diagram NOT listed in the part nbr index (when you click the link provided) means that item isn't used.

And the cargo cover connects to indentation/hooks in the trim around the tail gate opening. I don't have an image of it...but more than likely both #2 & #15 use the same part (#5) since there's no build date info in the TO/FROM supplemental columns in the part index.

yeah, I'm wanting to convert from the early 00-03 cargo cover (#2 in the pic) to #15 in the pic. I've been told from my searches on here that I need to update the two side pieces that the cover sits in...

#13's in the pic below. you can see the air slots in the one in the foreground of the picture. I'm just curious if this is true or not before I try and locate these pieces is all.

I updated my cargo cover earlier this year to the newer cover, man was it worth it, what the hell was BMW thinking with that freaking accordion cover! I'll try to answer your questions, also there's a DIY in the How To's section, but be warned the guy that wrote it screwed up one of the part numbers so use the Real OEM website numbers.

1. Simply buy the new side covers in the color that you need from your dealer or whomever you choose.

2. Underneath the cover there is an aluminum bar that the new cover is bolted to, the screw holes will not line up if you try to use the new cover with old bar. Now I was lucky and found a salvage 2006 X5 at my local salvage yard so I bought the bars from it for $20. But you can simply (what I should have done) put the new cover on the old bar and drill new holes, be sure and use as close a size drill bit as possible, a little smaller is better than too big as the screws are self tapping, and you're done.

3. When you remove the cover naturally there is a square shaped hole that is open, but I definitely wouldn't call it gaping by any stretch of the imagination.

4.I bought my cover used on Ebay, they cost way too much from the dealer new.

5. I sold my old cover on Craigslist for close to what I paid for the new cover...lol!

ok so the side covers you speak of in #1 are the #13's in the diagram I am pointing out in the post above?

not worried about drilling/tapping I have a full tap/die set in SAE and metric and pretty much every bolt/screw/nut you can imagine as I tear apart civics/integras/mustangs/cougars on the side as an ebay selling side project more/less lol. I always keep bolts/nuts...you never know when you'll need them.

so the cargo cover bolts in place instead of just lifting out?? dear god I can only imagine being the original yuppie owner and wanting to just pop out the cover to toss in a couch or something crazy...

No, the new side covers are bolt/screwed on, the cargo cover has a release button on the top right side, just press and lift it out.

Negative, parts #7 and #9 Vent Louver, #13 is a screw, production date for the louvers is From: 08/2003.

HINT: numbers that are encircled in the parts diagram are HARDWARE...which usually have their own index/key within the illustration.

The mention of #13 in some of the posts above are incorrect in that #13 is a screw (hardware)...so with the hint given above...remember to ALWAYS look at the part nbr index BELOW the diagram so that you're sure you have the correct part.

For instance, you can check the items that are needed by looking at the part nbr index BELOW the diagram...there should be a date in the TO/FROM columns if the part is only used for a specific period during the production run. Or if you used your VIN to look up the diagram and the part nbr is NOT listed...then that part isn't used on your vehicle. You can then search generically (in this case use a build date that is pre or post facelift) to find the "missing" part nbr that is drawn in the illustration but not listed in the part nbr index below the diagram.

Hmmm I'm curious about #9 and number #1 in first illustration. Can I retrofit that to my 06? Can you see out the back window with that up? I already have the back window shades just was curious about that. If you need any real life pics of the cargo cover I can take them in full color for you.
