Tyres Question - Change one or two

My car have

285/45 19 V 107 Michelin Diamiris summer tyres at rear. Thread is half worn.

One of the tyre got punctured and it is beyond repair. (at least this is what mechanic told)

Question:

1. Is it advisable to change only one tyre?
2. If above Q1 is yes, then same brand as other or any brand?

Mechanic told me to change both. I did not understand rationale. How does this make a difference or impact car/

Keep the same brand and the the same tire. Tires are like shoes, you wouldn't wear a dress shoe and a running shoe and go out jogging would you?

A worn tire will be a little different in size compare with a new tire, but that's what differentials are designed to handle. When you make a turn one wheel is turning faster then the other wheel, but the differential allow one wheel to turn faster then then the other wheel.

If it was me I would just opt to buy 4 new tires, but hey that just me.

At the very least, I would replace both tires. For the same reasons above.

I just went through the same thing with my own rear tires, same size.

Found a lump on one. Decided on a new pair of rears.

It is not absolutely necessary to go with the same brand. There may be other choices available with the same rating that are less expensive and wear longer. The tires should be the same height as the current tires but other than that and it will be noticeable if someone looks closely it will be fine.

Highly recommended to go with the same brand, tread pattern, and rubber compound, so as not to negatively impact vehicle handling and safety.

Anything over half worn is a candidate to be replaced when you replace one on the same axle, as the differential will be constantly turning to accomodate the different tire diameters. You can buy one new tire and have it shaved down, but it is generally just easier to change two on the same axle.

I worked in automotive throughout college amd encounterd this all the time. The gash on the tire is somewhat large. If it were my tire. I would repair it. Some shops don't want to risk liability.

If you want it repaired. Try another shop. Its far enough from the edge for the patch plug to stick.

Btw the gash maybe large. But it maybe just the top last of tread. Inside of the tire the puncture may be small.

Personally if it were me and i wanted the tire replaced. I would get a pair of a less expensive brand with similar tread and speed rating.

Change in pairs (at a minimum). As you have 19" wheels, the option of one new and one spare tire (if the same brand and model) won't work - a full size 19" wheel won't fit in the spare tire compartment of an X5.

For the X5 (E53) BMW provides a space saver tire (18") as a base or a full size 17" (for a car with 17" factory wheels) or a 19" space saver for a car with factory installed 19" wheels.

Be aware that you will need the same brand and type of front & rear tires when you pass the Swiss technical inspection.

SO, two new tires. When you only replace a pair of tires, the new ones should ALWAYS go on the rear of the car, regardless of front, rear or 4WD. There are some outstanding videos done by Michelin on their site (and likely Youtube) to demonstrate why.

Always in pairs on the same axel. On a AwD car it's really best to change all 4 at once.

Same brand and tire on the same axle. Some places like Costco only replace in set of 4 for a 4x4 and AWD vehicle.
