4.6is steering wheel play

hi, I noticed that my 2002 x5 4.6is has quite a bit of play in the steering wheel before it actually grabs and turns the wheels. What can I do to eliminate this play because its becoming pretty annoying?

Thanks!!

Get your suspension checked out. Jack up the front and wiggle your wheels. See whats loose. And replace it. Not much else to do, its obviously a worn part.

Last 2 E53's I felt these symptoms on had bad tie rods (rack side, not hub side).

But it could be a lot of things. I second bpowa's advice.

Going through my old threads. This was solved by replacing the U-joint in the steering column.
