any engine parts from a 01 525 fit an 01 x5?

just kinda curious. was out at the u-pull getting stuff for another car I'm doing and saw an 01 525i out there.

I know my 01 x5 has the 3.0l straight six and the 525 is a 2.5l straight six but I'm curious if stuff like the coil-on-plugs, injectors, possibly cylinder head were interchangeable?

I've never seen a bmw truck at a u-pull yard but I do see various low 00's cars out there. looks like at the least the engine cover would swap over and mine is cracked at the back corner...

at the least if the coils interchange they'd be nice to grab as cheap oem spares just in case.

Ditto TMV...cross referencing part nbrs is as easy as plugging in the BMW 11 digit part nbr on sites like realoem.com & bmwfans.info.

The bmwfans.info site tends to perform better with old part nbrs that are NLA...that site will offer up the new number along with references to older part nbrs that were replaced...so you may want to bookmark both sites in case realoem doesn't "cough" up the part nbr that has been retired.

Below are some examples of search boxes on realoem.com that allows you to cross reference parts to other BMW models:

(here's another one...but it has now been moved up to the top of the page to a RED search box just below where you type in the VIN)

(the top search box in pic below will only search for parts used on the vehicle model you've entered...but if you click the "part vehicle search" it will search for ALL BMW models that use the number you've entered)

Look for an E46, the engine is also a M54.

ok, just an update guys.

there's an 01' 530i and a 00' 323i

I'm using the realoem.com search as above with two windows open.

one is for getting the part number from my vehicle and the other is for searching that part number in the cross reference.

so for the valve cover I get 11121432928

I cross reference it and it shows:
E39 530i Sedan
E46 323i Touring
E46 323i Sedan

I'm still learning chassis codes but wikipedia has E39 as 95-03 5-series and E46 as 99-04 3-series.

what weirds me out is when I put in the part number in the ebay search it only shows the range from 98-02. regardless, I'm doing it right and both cars at the u-pull share the same valve cover as my car?

soo much different than honda or ford lol

what gets me more is that at the u-pull, the guy did the interchange on the vanos unit and said it ONLY fits 01-02 bmw x5 but when I get the part number off realoem.com (11361440142) it shows it will fit both the 530 and the 323?

I'm thinking I should go with the realoem over the counter guy but dont want to take the time to pull the units and pay the cash and they not fit...I'm wanting to build one up and have it ready to install when I pull mine apart...and then keep as a spare and such.

If you have a part number, and realoem shows that part number fits a particular vehicle (let's call it vehicle 2), then that means that if you went to the dealer and asked for that part for v2, then that is exactly the part you would receive. However you should check that Abby given part numberodd not listed for vehicle 2 but noted as discontinued.

First, remember that the Wikipedia information is from a world-wide perspective. The e39 didn't get imported to the USA market until the 1997 model year (due to the OBD II mandate that had to be met by 1/1996).

There was no 1996 5 series model year in the USA. The e34 5 series continued to be built up until approx 4/1996 and was "officially still a 1995 model year car...thus not required to meet OBD II.

The e39 rolled out June/1996 as an early 1997 model year. This is the reason for the difference between Realoem.com & Wikipedia. Go with realoem.com ...and pay attention not to just the models listed, but click on the "more details" link and look at the date range column in case there's a mid-production change. If there's a "specific" date range for a part...then you can always look at the BMW MFG label on the driver's door jamb (if the door can be opened).

For instance, the e39 6 cylinder engines imported to the USA went through 4 different engines between the 1997-2003 model years. It went from the single VANOS M52 engine, to the double VANOS M52TU, to the 2.5 & 3.0 liter M54 engines:

Any 1995 model year 5 series in the USA is going to be an e34 5 series and will have a build date range between 9/1994 - 4/1996. And any 2004-up model year 5 series is going to be an e60/e61 5 series or "f' body 5 series.

01 E39 530i has the same M54B30 engine as in an E53 X5 3.0
00 E46 323i has M54B25 engine (same as E39 525i), basically the same engine but smaller displacement. Some parts are interchangeable.
