Hey, Q, my 2004 has auto dimming mirrors (inside & outside - the outside also heated), but no compass.
Somewhere between 2001-2004, the rearview mirrors gained also the light under them.

I have the light under my rearview, but don't think my mirrors are auto dimming, or heated ... not that I needed the heated here.

Question: what would make my passenger side mirror NOT go back to it's memory position after shifting out of reverse? It happens quite often. I've setup the memory with the side mirror selector in both positions. When it doesn't shift back up, it wont even correct itself even if I hit the memory key

Does having the face-lifted, non-AHL, make my vehicle more difficult to find aftermarket housings? I really, really like the halo's as DRLs, and would really like to upgrade the lenses, etc.

I had issues with my mirrors as well, including the folding option didn't work anymore.
There are a few posts on this forum that shows how to open the mirrors & fix the offending contacts.
For your issue, it's a contact behind the glass, but you need to remove the glass & then the holder itself - documented with pics.
For autofolding it's behind the plastic housing. Both weren't working when I purchased the vehicle, now after DIY both are working correctly.

The pre facelift only has one grille screen along the bottom while the post have added grille screens on the two seperate openings above; may even be larger. Also the pre "Sports Package" grille is plastic painted silver while the post version are metal.

it seems that you have the face lift car but the front bumper is from a preface lifted X5 (does not look aftermarket, like Hammann, or AC Schnitzer), the pre face bumpers house a fog light by Valeo that is longer version and is an "ellipsoid" - the front of the light looks like a magnifying glass, and not like a flat house window glass... given the replacement bumper and the over spray, it seems that the original front bumper was either damaged or the car was in front collision and the car was repaired, probably using a donor X5. before doing any mods, do a visual inspection of the front of the car, including the engine bay - the radiator, the hoses, anything that might look out of place...

the plastic cover that you circled on the first picture is a cover that hides a threaded hole for the tow hook, the hook should be in the trunk area, under the floor cover, on the right, inside a plastic mold.

post face lift x, with pre-face lift front bumper.
pre-dates BT and pre-dates AHL <- Would that allow me to use pre-face lift headlight housing?
not quite a 1/2 model, just a true '04 preemie.
I wonder what else I'm missing out on ... oh well, it's my first X5, so at least I know what to look for on my next ... auto dimming mirrors that fold in, AHL, halo DRLs, everything that really counts. hahaha

Will add this to my mental rolodex.

This is not true. The post update SPP are in fact painted plastic as well. Both of my 2004 sport package X5's have plastic painted grills.

you can't use prefacelift headlights in facelift openings, as the shape of the lights is different.

have you checked the last 7 digits of your VIN against the as-built specs? if you haven't, you drop me your last 7, i will check it for you

Where is a picture of your X5, haumana?
Looks like you have the BMW flare body kit front bumper like the one below
