How to remove a phone insert???

My 2002 X5 3.0i came with a phone insert under the center armrest.
It doesn't fit my phone and I probably wouldn't use it even if it did.
I want to remove it in hopes of gaining more storage area.
The phone part seems to be in good shape except for the rear hinge is broken on one side.
May even work if I had a phone for it to hook to.
Opens, closes, and locks shut just fine tho.

Also want to trade the CD holder compartment under it for one that has just storage without the CD holder part.

Any ideas on these issues??

the actual phone insert itself can be removed using two credit cards. one inserted each side towards the rear of the phone insert where the hinge is. then simply lift it out

Not sure if you literally mean you want to "trade" (exchange) your CD holder insert (#4 in the diagram) with someone who has the storage insert (#1 in the diagram) or if you're looking to buy a new or used one.

But if you want to procure (like in buy a new or used one)...then go to the link to the diagram below and get the 11 digit BMW part nbr for the storage insert (#1)...then google "BMW xx xx x xxx xxx" (where x=bmw part nbr)...and you should get thousands of results of vendors (BMW & aftermarket vendors) that sell that piece.

BTW, if you're not familiar with the part database...when an item number is bracketed with other numbers...it means that those items are included (example: #4 includes #2 & #5)...so if you were to purchase a new #1...you will want to save & transfer the coin holder (#2) that is in your existing CD holder compartment to use in your new storage container.

Yes I would consider a trade with someone who wants a cd holder and has all the other items that its replaces.
Actually I could do without the coin holder also. Its a pain to get change out of most times.
I'd guess most likely I would have to buy a new one somewhere.
Seems if I remove the cd holder I would then need item #3 in the picture correct?

I checked it out but don't see what you mean. The area I'm seeing appears to be almost molded to the other areas.

Is this where you mean to use the credit cards??

Kinda incorrect...#3 in the diagram...fits/conforms to the bottom of item #1 which as you can see in the diagram is a different "shape" (deeper, too) than item #4 (storing partition w/CD holder).

Item #3 is just a "soft" bottom for the (#1) storage partition compartment so that stuff stored in it doesn't make rattling noises as you drive around (aggressively). It's optional.

OK I see. I was hoping to be able to remove the cd holder (rectangular) box itself and get one of those soft bottom inserts.
But I dont dislike the cd holder enough to buy a new #1 piece....$175 at ECS Tuning.

Thanks for the info tho.
