Question Why does my engine look like this?
Just finished replacing the valve cover gasket and noticed the VANOS unit is dark brown/black? I hope that's normal.

That's not bad at all.
If you saw some deposits flaking of those,then it would be to worry about.

Haha well, the joke's on me, cuz my own valve cover is leaking too! How did your valve cover gasket replacement go? And speaking of vanos, am thinking of doing the vanos o-rings at the same time as well.

It actually went easier that I thought it would. But then again the engine has only 75k miles. The outer gasket was still flexible/rubbery so not sure why it was leaking. However the spark plug gaskets center pieces were brittle and broke off so I had to be careful with them.
Didn't touch then VANOS unit. Will probably service them after 100k -125k miles.
