Pre-face lift are cars made before BMW does its mid life cycle changes to their vehicle. If you look at a 2003(pre face lift) and a 2004 (post facelift), you will see that the headlight, bumper, wheels, steering wheel, maybe navigation, and even numbering are different. For example, you have 4.6is in 2002 and 2003....this is a pre-face lift model. 2004-2006 are post face lift and they changed it to 4.8is.

Hope I explained it properly.

It not the cold weather. Mine is an 02 that has spent it's life in Dallas. Same as yours-- like brand new. Problem doesn't look common to us.

Green doesn't mean the product is not as good. Nor is a forum a good indicator of a common problem or verification of poor quality---forums are all about problems and mods.

I have yet to see a newbie post they are about to or that just purchased an E53 X that escaped without someone telling them they have just entered their worst fantasy of hell, just endorsed their total lack of good judgment.

If I were a newbie I would be very tempted to ask why we enjoy hell so much and contend we are the ones with s**t for brains as we not only still own an X but we are also still investing in them.

James, I know we are on the side of the glass is half full and that side does not always see the obvious.

That said, I think it appropriate that a newbie should be aware how important TLC is to a better experience with an X5. I don't think it is in the best interest of the newbie to present the maximum hurt and not the good.

The half empty group almost always seems to be louder and longer and the thread ends up sounding like we are anorexic cutters---there is no good and the only feelings we have is when it hurts.

Agreed.

Just pointing out that the good feeling of doing through DIYing and enjoying a well sorted out BMW is tempered by the pain endured in getting to that point (I needed Advil for 2 days post brake system overhaul). Sweat equity is part of the +10 yr old, over 100k mile BMW owner experience.

I rather like the bad rap older, high mile BMWs get. It allows me to search the used car market for good 7+ yr old vehicle and pick them up for less then 25% new price.

A clean, well maintained, 100k mile vehicle that sold for almost $60k new and can be had for under $13k is right in my wheelhouse! Add to that the fact you don't seen them at every stoplight.

Thats the part I love the most. When I first bought my E46 there where only maybe a handful in my town.
Now they are popular and everywhere......may be getting time to sell it.
