Pffft, $150 of self-induced damage? Amateur.

My last self-induced failure cost over $1k. Consider yourself lucky…

I was backing out this morning out of a parking garage and broke off the passenger mirror by hitting a concrete column next to my parking space. So mad at myself, I parked too close and forgot to be cautious on my way out. I looked on ebay...is this really a $500 part???
If so, I might as well claim it under my insurance and take it to a pro rather than doing it myself.

The WHOLE mirror broke off? Or just part of it like the back over or trim ring?

I'd suggest pulling up the diagram on realoem.com ...enter last 7 digits of your VIN, look under VEHICLE TRIM (main group) OUTSIDE MIRROR (sub group).

You can then see how much the parts are that need replacement. If there's salvageable parts, you can reuse them (perhaps the mirror glass). And the cost also depends on which type of mirrors you have....EC (auto-dimming), regular, folding, etc....none of which we know you have.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
My father in law just backed into the front left fender of my wife's 2011 Rav4 when backing up last week in the driveway.

Ended up being an $1100 fix he footed at the bodyshop, parts, paint etc. And that was just backing up in the driveway, not like a real "accident" on the road lol.

Jeez if the fender crumples up that easily maybe I should get my wife in an E53, the Toyota's sheet metal is way too thin for my liking....

Not at all, but when she bought it 2+ years ago, that was the only car she knew (her previous one was an '04 Rav), so she went with another one. I was about 4 months prior to acquiring my X at that point, but I've driven German cars my whole life, and there is a HUGE difference in the feeling of safety compared to the Honda/Toyotas out there.

At the time, we were just dating so I really didn't have much say on the type of vehicle she would be driving, her mom had an E83 but is one of the types of people that just turns the car on and goes, and doesn't care about it. Needless to say, my MiL traded in the E83 for a Toyota, as it suits her better and she can keep it as filthy as she wants to without me cringing. I felt so bad for that E83.

What kept my wife from getting an E83 was at the time we were only dating less than a year, so she was still learning from me what true proud car ownership is about (she is phenomenal now, hardly ever eats in the Rav nowadays!), add to the fact that her mom's first E83 was bought back by BMW as a lemon, and it was hard to convince my future wife at the time that she wouldn't run into the same problem.

Looking back though, I definitely wish she did get a CPO'ed E83, would make me feel better driving her vehicle on the road as we use it probably 65% of the time, as she can't drive stick and our Chad doesn't get to ride in Daddy's X.

Give it a few years I'll have her in a Bimmer...

If she prefers a smaller vehicle with some utility...don't overlook a 3 series Touring (wagon) if also looking at the X3. They give the same BMW ride/feel/handling as the sedans...but have increased utility with the rear cargo area. More room for loading up the strollers etc that come 9 months after the "pumpkin patch".

And BMW offers the Tourings (3 & 5 series) with x-Drive now...so if that's a must have...then again, its something to look at or at least give it a "drive" to see if it's a vehicle that could fit the bill.

I loved my Tourings (e34 525iT & e39 540iT). I appreciated their low center of gravity, ease of loading due to lower height, and you really couldn't tell you were driving a station wagon until you looked into the rear view mirror.

Below is some pics of M Wong's 2012 328xiT (e91 w/sport pkg):

Well Qsilver that is a nice thought about the "post pumpkin patch" story but lets just say we both have no visions of future children for the next couple of years at least (both are 27 now). Very content living a balanced happy life and her taking that little pill daily which keeps us from having one of those "pumpkin patch accidents" lol!

Plus, we already have a 7 year old, 71 lb child who will lick you to death and is a high maintenance boy! *American Bulldog content*

This is what he does by the way, when we are going to the doctor for him! I have to stand up and he wants to sit on the bench in the exam room and wait for the doggy doctor, as opposed to all the other normal dogs who just walk around the room LOL

BACK ON TOPIC, however, I like where your head is at and I always <3 Euro wagons, if I could get the wife in a 3 series, diesel, with xdrive wagon someday I'd gladly do it. I have a feeling she'll want an X3 though, she "doesn't like being low in a car"
