How to determine which transmission I have
Short of crawling under the X, is there a way I can lookup which auto transmission I have? Mine is an FA53 with a production date of 10/15/2002.

Someone is already replacing your tranny.. The info you found will be obsolete The French General motor is the maker of trannys for 3.0 2000 - 2004 (stretch 2005), I can be wrong I always like redline for my x5 ATF Quote:

OP, lhord gave you a good source with realoem. While BMW refers to your transmission as an A5S-390, GM (who built it) call it a 5L40-E. Read about it on wiki here: GM 5L40-E transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. It is not built by GM of France as suggested above, but rather by GM Powertrain, a global operation. The specific factory they use for this transmission is in France.
tmv: Nope, it is a 3.0 and not a V8, so not ZF.
