How to determine which transmission I have

Short of crawling under the X, is there a way I can lookup which auto transmission I have? Mine is an FA53 with a production date of 10/15/2002.

You have a 5sp Steptronic GM tranny. I know you have a way to check that info, without crawling under it

Edit:--------------------------^corrected.

I have no idea why looking it up on realoem (or ETK, for that matter) never occurred to me... Thanks!

While you are busy surfing the net,
Someone is already replacing your tranny..

The info you found will be obsolete

The French General motor is the maker of trannys for 3.0
2000 - 2004 (stretch 2005), I can be wrong

I always like redline for my x5 ATF

OP, lhord gave you a good source with realoem. While BMW refers to your transmission as an A5S-390, GM (who built it) call it a 5L40-E. Read about it on wiki here: GM 5L40-E transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. It is not built by GM of France as suggested above, but rather by GM Powertrain, a global operation. The specific factory they use for this transmission is in France.

tmv: Nope, it is a 3.0 and not a V8, so not ZF.

Fill in the blanks

- Designed
- Parts Manufacturer/Made by
* Local versus outsourced factories
- Assembled and Tested

Excerpts from bimmer fest (GM BMW Tran)

GM transmissions in BMWs are made in France; they're a somewhat separate division to GMs in USA

Actually the GM transmissions made in the good old USA as used in a GM car are some of the most reliable trannies out there. The GM unit used in BMWs are actually made in France.

The steptronic tranny is a GM design built by Alison in France in a clean room then sealed and shipped to final assembly.

Well, that's the problem, you are getting your information from anonymous sources on discussion boards

GM Powertrain is a division of GM, but it is a global component division, and isn't the same as GM Europe which builds cars. The factory in France built transmissions for American GM models as well, such as the Camaro and Cadillac, including the CTS. GM Powertrain is actually headquartered in the US.

Allison (don't know who Alison is) is a commercial heavy duty transmission manufacturer that used to be owned by GM. They don't build automobile transmissions.

GM Powertrain sold the factory in France. After some go rounds, it is now owned by ZF.
