does a weka battery cause damage?

ok that time of year again and until i get a new battery just wondering cos i am sure i read it somewhere that having a below par battery can cause damage to electrical components?, my nov 2004 e.53 x5 3.0d hesitates to fire up straight away now the temps have dropped, had same issue last year but made it through the short winter somehow, this year it wont without a new battery, i am still runnning on OEM battery, and I will get on asap but in meantime does anyone know? i read this can cause the alternator problems if the battery is too weak?also q silvers 7 tips as below, do they apply for sure?

The e53 DOES NOT use an IBS on the battery...so you don't need to keep a trickle charger hooked up to the jump start locations when you change the battery...unless you want to for other reasons. If you have an e70 X5...then yes, you would...if not you'd probably have to get the new battery "coded".

E53 X5 3.0d negative battery cable is #10 in the diagram below. Click the link and scroll down to #10 and look for any info in the supplemental column that mentions anything about an IBS (intelligent battery sensor). BTW, you won't find it because again, this technology didn't appear until the e70 X5.

E70 X5 3.0d negative battery cable is #1 in the diagram below & if you click the link you'll see the mention of the IBS listed in the supplemental columns. The mention of the IBS is important here because owners need to know that this sensor is required in the e70 set-up.

A weak battery won't cause damage to the electrical components, although it will put added strain on the alternator.

A dead battery can cause a bunch of warning lights on your dash as the car will start to disable features to conserve energy, your traction control, abs, possibly tire pressure monitor, radio etc... will all start to shut down.

A battery isn't a major purchase, you can get a replacement at any walk in auto parts store for just a hair over 100 bucks. There is no need to even worry, just got get a battery.

brandon002 and q7silver thanks, i guess i worry too much, but have read some pretty bad posts on this site about guys who replaced batteries on e53 without the IBS and their key fobs don't work or something else has stopped working....jeez how hard can it be....

Cheapest decent battery i have found is a bosch 120ah at a cool 159euros which is a like a shade over 200bucks.....when i questioned the supplier about the fact that my original battery is 90ah rated he just said, 120ah is no problem we sell them to main bmw dealer all the time.....to be honest I prefer a battery with the same rating a probably more of an accepatable price.....alas shipping one from elswhere is prohibitively expensive so not an option.....either way I will try to get one before i fry the alternator...thanks again

A battery that is better than an OEM battery will provide better service and many have a longer warranty. It will likely be higher cost also.

What year and engine is your X? (Please add to your signature when you have an opportunity as there are different considerations to make when changing a battery depending on what you have).

Don't leave the key on & in the ignition when replacing the vehicle's battery...and don't leave the key in the ignition (on) overnight and let the battery drain/die while the key is in the ignition ...and you shouldn't have a problem with the remote key not working.

As far as the Weka battery...what class size or group nbr is the one you're getting? Just make sure the battery class size is correct for fitment & venting. It needs a BCI of either 49/H8 or 95/H9. There's a bit of wiggle room a few class sizes smaller like 47/48/H7 or 93/94....but try to stay with the aforementioned 49/H8 or 95/H9 if possible.

EXAMPLES: of battery class size/group number

I have disconnected the battery many many times. I sometimes lose radio presets and/or some of the stalk readouts but nothing else. I never provide any voltage to the system while the battery is disconnected.

qsilver7 thanks, have to remember the vent holes yes good point, dont know the exact model of bosch it is but they are sure it is suitable and being 100ah i guess ok, one last thing on the side, my airbag is removed (long story) there wont be any issue swapping out battery whilst this is not connected is there?
