My first X5 - 2003 3.0i
The dealer's slapped on new pads and rotors all around, and at first blush it looks like there won't be much immediate maintenance to do, but will be nosing around some more to be sure. Belts look good, new brakes all around, valve cover gasket's new, mufflers are new, hoses, power steering reservoir and expansion tank look good, as does the suspension. She rides smooth and quiet, corners like she's on rails No signs of oil leaks, no strange exhaust smells. My tentative to do list, depending on how things look when I get in there: Water pump, tensioners, and pulleys (with belts, just for peace of mind). Thermostat AT Thermostat CCV and hoses Oil filter housing gasket I'm also thinking to do the tranny fluid in the spring, if it looks bad. With other cars I've owned, most of the fluid sits in the TC. I'm guessing it's the same for the X, so is the trans service a realistic DIY? The hood roundel has got some wear, so that will be the first DIY :P Anyone know a good place in Toronto to get a new one, or a Canada-based website to order from? Don't want to pay absurd customs fees. SO looking forward to getting behind the wheel again!

Took her home today... FUN to drive!
However, the driver side brake makes an ugly noise when I brake in slush and at a very slow speed. Dealer's going to take a look at it. Hope they didn't do something wrong when they put on the new pads and rotors. I suspect it might be that they didn't grease the pins... grrr.

Thanks, will do... going to use the Youtube monkey-see-monkey-do method, haha. Took the twisty way back from the dealer, and I'd have to say this baby handles better IMHO than the Mercedes ML. Can't wait to do some 'real' driving. Took a few pics, wondering what the big red thing on the bottom of the mirror is.

Either way let the dealer figure out what they did wrong! That big red thing is useful this time of year....well actually only useful one of the year really (Santa doesn't really have a sleigh or reindeer you know ). Its part of the alarm/anti theft system....just a light as far as I can work out.

We call it the "Clown nose"... It's just an indicator that the anti-theft system is active. Don't ask me why it's so big. More recent models (F15 for example) have a low-profile version.

It's also a rear view mirror dimmer knob if you don't have auto dim. A simple twist will toggle it back and forth.

Congrats, I will also be joining the rookie ranks of the X series, looking for something very similar to what you found.
